  7. August Highlights In East...

East Africa is home to endless stretches of beaches, vast national parks, exotic and diverse wildlife, and pristine islands. August is one of the driest months of East Africa, making it an ideal month to travel to East Africa. The wildlife is concentrated around bodies of water and the temperature is not too cold or too hot.

Here’s why you should visit East Africa in August:

1. Observe the Great Migration at Serengeti

August is one of the most exciting months to observe the Great Migration. This is the month when most of the herds cross the Mara River. During the crossing, Nile crocodiles sweep out of the water and prey on the incoming wildebeests and zebras! It’s an interesting sight, but not for the faint-hearted.

2. Check out the Big 5 at Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is known for its black rhino population. Although the other 4 of the Big 5 can be found at many national parks across Tanzania, black rhinos tend to be elusive and rare. However, at Ngorongoro, black rhinos are easily spotted, especially in August. The dry season and low vegetation mean wildlife is concentrated around water and easier to spot.

3. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro

August is a dry month, which means you can climb Mount Kilimanjaro. If you’re up for the hike, you can even reach the summit. Otherwise, going to the base camp is also pretty rewarding and you’ll get amazing views along the way! Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and it’s worth a visit.

You can spot sable and puku antelopes here, along with the critically endangered African wild dogs. The wildlife is concentrated around bodies of water in August, making it a prime time for wildlife viewing in Selous.

5. Get up Close with Rare Wildlife at Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is a hidden gem in Tanzania and is often referred to as a “predator’s paradise.” You can spot rare wildlife species here including roan and sable antelopes, greater kudus, lesser kudus, and African wild dogs! Ruaha is also famous for its large population of elephants and buffaloes. Other predators like lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, and leopards can also be spotted here!
