  7. Tanzania Airport Authority Introduces...

The Tanzania Airport Authority (TAA) has announced that an additional security levy will be added to the cost of flights flying in, out and within Tanzania. This levy will be imposed on all passengers boarding an aircraft at domestic and international airports within Tanzania. Both local Tanzanian residents, as well as foreign tourists, will be liable to pay this levy when visiting this African destination.

How much will the fee add to my travel expenses?

The new levy will cost an additional TZS 5,000 (US$2) for those boarding domestic flights and US$5 for those on international flights.

What is the reason for the fee?

The new additional fee will be used for a series of travel infrastructure and operational upgrades. Such as enhancement of airport security through installation of high-tech equipment and safety services, including perimeter fences and state-of-the-art scanning machines to improve detection.

The result of these changes will improve the speed and efficiency at which security checks are done as well as shorten waiting times. Eventually, these systems should also reduce the occasions where passengers are subjected to intrusive body searches.

When will the new fees be applicable?

It has been confirmed that the security levy will affect both foreign and domestic travellers booked with airlines flying inside and outside Tanzania, and will take effect from Thursday 1st November 2018.

The introduction of the fee may cause some issues especially with travellers who have booked tickets well in advance may not have been aware of the additional fees. We encourage you to contact the airline you've booked with and enquire to their policies on how they will handle the additional fees and if your booking will be affected or not.
