Book Flights to Eldoret

Eldoret – Kenya

The name Eldoret comes from the local word ‘eldore’ meaning stony river, referring to the Sosiani River that runs through the town.

The fast-growing town of Eldoret, located in the midwest of Kenya, sits at an altitude of 2100-2700m. Eldoret is ideally situated close to the Great Rift Valley, allowing access to the many valleys, waterfalls, and viewpoints that can be found in this area; making it an ideal location for exploration.

Eldoret’s high altitude and location make it a great sport and outdoor destination. It is extremely popular with runners and cyclists for the excellent training opportunities and with paragliders for the perfect flying conditions year-round.

The town itself has a welcoming charm, with a comfortable social scene, relaxing eateries all taken at a moderate pace.

Best time to visit

Kenya’s higher inland regions are very pleasant and boast daytime temperatures between 20°C/68°F and 28°C/82°F; often cooler at night.

Kenya has a dry season from June to October, a wet season called ‘short rains’ in November and December, another dry spell in January and February, followed by the ‘long rains’ in March, April, and May.

For running training it is best to avoid the months of March and November as it is almost impossible to train due to the muddy roads. Paragliding is best from late December through to February for big cross country flights. But the cooler months and the rainy season offer smooth flying and more predictable winds.

Sights and sounds

Any runner can benefit from a training camp in Eldoret and in recent years even cyclists are starting to see the benefits of training here.

Dining and Dietary Considerations

Eldoret offers a range of food, from restaurants to street food for all budgets.

Eldoret gives you the opportunity to eat real Kenyan food. Many of the athletes eat Kenya’s staple called Ugali (maize porridge) served with vegetables and beans or sometimes meat. Favourite breakfast dishes include: chapatis (a thin pancake of unleavened whole-grain bread) or mandazis (similar to a doughnut, sometimes flavored with spices) served with hot, milky Kenyan tea served with lots of sugar.

Religious and Cultural considerations

More than 80% of Kenyans are practicing Christians. About 11% are Muslim, although some say the percentage of Muslims is much higher. The Muslim population is concentrated on the coast and in north-east of Kenya.
