Located in the Indian Ocean on the northern coast of Kenya, the Lamu Archipelago features a variety of islands between the towns of Kiunga and Lamu. The largest of the islands are Lamu IslandManda Island and Pate Island. The archipelago is steeped in history and culture and features ancient towns, fishing villages, and white sandy beaches.   • Lamu Town

The town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a cultural town with an old world charm, featuring narrowed streets and alleyways, remarkable Swahili architecture, local markets and interesting museums. You’ll discover the reminders of the island’s historic contribution in the slave trade, which reflects in its diverse culture. The Old Town is stunningly constructed with mangrove timber and coral stone; and its originality is not polluted by roads, cars or any type of vehicles.

  • Shela Village

It is a small fishing village located several kilometres from Lamu Town and you can easily get there via boats. At low tide, you can take a 45minutes walk along the Seafront from Lamu to Shela. The village features several accommodation options including holiday villas and guesthouses.  Beach lovers love to stay at Ras Kitau, which is a barefoot paradise.

  • Manda Bay

A perfect place for a relaxing holiday is Manda Bay, which is an open bay located between Manda Island and the mainland north of Lamu Island. It features a wide range of activities in its crystal-clear waters such as dhow sailing, snorkelling, and swimming. The bay has a beach lodge with its own airstrip and offers visitors an opportunity to indulge in game drives to see a variety of wildlife species such as buffalo.

  • Kiwayu Island

Located north of Lamu, Pate and Manda Islands is Kiwayu Island, which is situated within the Kiunga Marine Reserve. How to get there

There are a few ways to reach the Lamu Archipelago by air or a combination of road and sea.

  • Air:

You can reach Lamu by air with most popular flights into Lamu coming from MalindiMombasa and Nairobi with Air Kenya, Fly540 and Safarilink.  All flights land on Manda Island and you take a short walk to the jetty for a boat ride. Some flights may have stop-overs at Kiwayu’s little airstrip.

  • Road:

You can travel by road to Malindi, and then grab a ferry takes you from the Mokowe jetty to Lamu Town.

Best time to visit

You can visit the Lamu archipelago at any time of the year. However, the best time to visit Lamu is from late November until the end of March or the cooler winter months of July and August.

  • High Season: From July and August and November until the end of March
  • Low Season: Between March and April
  • Best Weather: From June to September
  • Worst Weather: From May-early July and November – during the rainy season

Unique Experiences: You will experience the Maulidi festival, which marks the birth of the Prophet Mohammed. You can take a donkey race or ride on a dhow in November.

Throughout the year: You can enjoy dhow ride and donkey racing all through the year.

  • July and October and also January through February: There is a wide range of activities to enjoy during this time in the coastal Kenyan paradise.
