Solio Game Reserve is a privately-owned wildlife sanctuary nestled in the valley between the peaks of the Aberdare Mountains and the lofty slopes of Mount Kenya.  It’s the oldest private rhino sanctuary in Kenya and a pioneer in breeding black rhinos in the country. Occupying 45,000-acres, Solio Game Reserve also hosts a wide range of wildlife such as impala, zebra, giraffe, leopard, and warthog as well as a variety of bird species.

How to get there

There are several options for travellers looking to make their way to Solio Game Reserve both via air and road.


Most travellers chose to start their journey from Nairobi since it is the main hub and has a couple of options with Nanyuki being the gateway or the nearby Nyeri.


If you elect to drive from Nairobi, the distance is 197 kilometres and should not take more than three hours on any of the variable roads.

Best time to visit

You can visit Solio Game Reserve at any time of the year; however, your safari plans can be disrupted by heavy downpour during the rainy season.  Every November, Solio Game Reserve is closed.

  • High Season: July to October (High season rates apply)
  • Low Season: February to May (April might have heavy rain)
  • Best Weather: June to September and December to February (Less rain)
  • Worst Weather: March, April, May and October (Short and long rains)
