Important information for passengers

Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) is the national carrier of Tanzania. This company, headquartered at Dar es Salaam, came into existence in the year 1977 after East African Airways was dissolved.

ATCL, which has been a member of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) since its advent, has witnessed a number changes not just in its structure but also ownership, so far. This was done by the government to ensure it had a strong and accountable national airline in place.

In the year 2002, ATCL underwent partial privatization, when the government cut down its shareholding to 51 per cent and partnered with South African Airways (SAA). In 2006, the government repurchased SAA’s shares and became the full owner of the company, again. It has served scores of regional, domestic and intercontinental destinations over the years.

Baggage Allowance

Checked Baggage

The total permissible checked baggage weight limit is 20 kgs for economy class passengers. For business class, however, the cap is 30 kgs.

•    Carry-on Luggage

Air Tanzania allows 7 kgs of hand baggage free of cost. Any extra checked or carry-on luggage is charged. And the rate for extra baggage is Tshs 8000 per kilo for domestic flights and USD 5.00 for International flights.

Flying with Children

There are currently no special considerations for children flying with Air Tanzania


Air Tanzania requires that passengers check in 40 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and 2 hours for international flights. Boarding tends to begin about 20 minutes to departure while the boarding gates will close 10 minutes before departure time.

Air Tanzania has two basic cabin classes on offer- economy, and business. These classes are available in most of the carriers.

Air Tanzania has regular flights to the following destinations Mwanza, Bukoba, Kigoma, Mbeya, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Dodoma, Tabora, Songea, and Mtwara and makes use of the following airports for its domestic routes.

International Routes

The only international destination Air Tanzania carriers fly to is Hahaya and Moroni in the Comoros.

Fleet Information

ATCL embarked on a fleet upgrade mission under which six new carriers were to be included from 2016 to 2018. The mission included the procurement of three Bombardier DASH8 Q400 (procurement was done), besides two Bombardier CS300 and one Boeing 787 Dreamliner to be procured by June 2018. So, by July 2018, the company expects to own a fleet of seven aircraft in total, one Bombardier DASH8 Q300 being already in operation since 2011.
